West Ham United pre 1965 - Essex
|
This already feels like a daft question, but in 1965 the London boundary expanded and large chunks of west Essex into east London. So pre 1965, were we considered an Essex club?

An apocryphal story from a GPO sorting office told of a section of pigeonholes labelled E1 – E10. Underneath which, some ‘wag’ had written “Old McDonald Had A Farm”

My dad was from Dagenham and always said he was from Essex and I believe he thought of Upton Park as Essex as well. I lived in Twickenham in the 70s & 80s and it was still normal to refer to it as Middlesex and include MDDX in our home address.

The compass postcodes have never matched the boundaries of London. Before '65 many of the E postcodes were in Essex. Post '65 the London boundary moved into the RM postcodes but some of those were in Thurrock which is outside London.
A lot of people seem to still use them to define London's boundaries. Think my parents swear they define the city even though they never have done.

There are parts of Barking, Dagenham and Ilford with E postcodes aswell. Obviously not the majority of the areas but there is.
A postcode is just co ordinates as to somewhere’s location in accordance with their nearest sorting office, has nothing to do with the actual area.

I always consider London as per the traditional compass postcodes, anything E is East London, the likes of Ilford/Romford are Essex.

The people/family I know who grew up in Newham are all too suburban to be Eastenders. Canning Town people are a bit more like Eastenders which is maybe because of the docks. But they are still not quite city people in my experience. People of Mile End, Stepney, Bethnal green and Hackney are taken from a different cut. Something changes when you cross the river lea. It's very subtle but its noticeable.
As side note, I have an Arsenal mate (unfortunately) who now lives on the south coast. I took him over West Ham and he once commented how everyone looks like a different breed of Englishman to the rest of the city and its suburbs. I know what he means, I get a similar feeling when I look at the English people living south of the river. It could be genetic as east Londoners have quite a special mix over the years but it's probably just cultural or social class: people dress and behave very differently south of the river compared to how they do in East London/Essex. It's noticeable.

Is Romford in Essex or east London? When I lived round that way I considered it to be Essex but when I go there now it’s seems very much east London

I seem to remember the border between Middlesex and Essex was the river Lee. I can remember drinking in the Bridge House and it closing at half past ten and rushing over the bridge to the Iron Bridge Tavern for the last half hour as they had LCC licencing laws.

Like I said, the Thames Ironworks offices were in blackwall. The foundry was on the canning town side. So at the very least the founding articles of the club were made up in London, not Essex.

This from the font of all dubious knowledge would suggest that it was on both sides:
"From 1847 the company grew considerably and Mare purchased land on the Canning Town side of the River Lea, a ferry service being established between the two sites"

Was Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company on the west or east side of Leamouth?
The club might have started as an Essex club but the company it sprang from could have been in Middlesex??

Someone mentioned Upminster in an earlier post. One of my pet hates is when people pronounce it Upminister. Don't know why but really f**ks me off. I feel better getting that off my chest.

Interesting. So an East End club originally, then Essex once moved to Canning Town/Upton Park until 1965.
I'm glad I asked this question, because it is a matter of understanding my clubs history, at least from my standpoint.
